Good Weather? Get Gardening!

Good Weather? Get Gardening!

With the good weather finally here to stay (I feel like I've written that many times already this spring, so hopefully it holds true!), it's time to get outside and get to work on that lawn or garden!

While mowing the lawn, tending to your tomato plants, or deciding where to plant your annuals, working outside can be very physically demanding, and while slight, there is still a risk for injury.

Here are some tips to keep you feeling your best as you get going in the garden this spring!

✓ Dress comfortably - Though simple, this basic concept is often overlooked. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Layer appropriately so that when you start working up a sweat (and you will!), you can remove the outer layer. Wear comfortable shoes/boots with good grip so you don't slip on any slick grass or mud.

✓ Stretch before you start - Just like any form of physical activity, stretching is a good starting point. Check out the stretches in this post for some quick and easy ways to get ready to rake!

✓ Use the right tools - From rake, to shovel, to garden spade, using the right tools is essential. If you're going to be kneeling for long periods of time, strap on a pair of knee pads (or use a gardening kneeler). And, don't forget to protect your hands with a good pair of gloves!

✓ Maintain good posture - This sounds silly, I know, but it's true. When raking, keep your back neutral and your knees slightly bent. Change which side you hold the rake with every few minutes. Avoid twisting with your low back. Instead, turn your whole body in the direction you're raking. When lifting, bend at your hips and knees, and keep your back neutral. Check out this post for tips on proper lifting.

✓ Take breaks - This isn't a race. Unless, of course, you're competing against your neighbour across the street. But, since that probably isn't the case, take your time. Pace yourself. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated!

Working outside on the lawn or garden is a great way to spend time with family and friends! Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend, and get out there!
